History & Mission

History
The Fredericksburg Area Library was conceived in the minds of local residents as a hope for the future. Through diligent hard work and generous donations of books, volunteers unveiled the first library in April of 1982. Its home was in the basement of the Fredericksburg Community Health Center, where it remained until December 1989. Through the generous giving of time and resources by many civic minded residents, the old Church of God building at 136 West Main Street was completely renovated and became the library’s new home. Then in 2002, residents of the community watched the construction of a beautiful new 7,000 square foot building progress on the northwest corner of Center and Main Streets in Fredericksburg. This generous gift, now known as the Matthews Public Library, given by George and June Matthews will continue blessing the community of Northern Lebanon County for generations to come.

Mission Statement
The Matthews Public Library exists for the purpose of providing facilities and services for education, research, cultural enrichment, and reading enjoyment for all the people of Northern Lebanon County.
